The April 22, 2014 O.M.N.I. Talk: William Taylor presents

Painting Cubes

Abstract: In this talk we will explore an interesting recreational mathematics problem. The task is to paint the faces of small cubes with various colors in such a way that the cubes can be arranged in various ways to form a larger cube with all exterior faces the same color. We will examine the smallest cases via explicit construction. Using polynomial theory, we will explore the general problem. This talk will be an expanded version of a talk given at the 2014 OK-AR MAA conference earlier this month.
